Why Greencode Invested in Groundhawk

March 12, 2026 Greencode

We’re excited to announce our investment in Groundhawk, an AI-powered 3D mapping platform transforming how underground utilities are mapped and documented. Leading their €2m investment round, we are proud to back Groundhawk's mission to modernize infrastructure mapping through real-time documentation, AI-driven automation, and democratized precision scanning technology.

“As networks expand and regulations tighten, Groundhawk becomes the essential interface between physical construction and digital infrastructure. The team brings an exceptional combination of sector insight and technical expertise – and their strong early traction was the last piece that convinced us to invest,” says Ines Bergmann-Nolting, Managing Partner at Greencode Ventures.

About Groundhawk

Groundhawk is a B2B SaaS platform built for mapping electricity and fiber networks during active construction. The solution enables construction workers – rather than specialized surveyors – to document underground cables and pipes in real-time using AI-powered 3D scanning technology while trenches remain open. Field crews capture precise cable locations, depths, protections, and connections with photographic evidence, achieving centimetre-level positioning accuracy. The data automatically uploads to Groundhawk's cloud platform where proprietary AI processes 3D point clouds into structured vector data. The result: cost savings, faster project completion, and better quality control.

Today Groundhawk is active across six countries, with particularly strong traction in the Nordics. The firm’s customers include major Nordic and European infrastructure contractors such as Eltel Networks, Voimatel, Elvera, and Signal Group, which serve network operators including Telia, Telenor, Caruna, Global Connect, E.on, and Valokuitunen. With proven customer economics and healthy unit economics, Groundhawk is positioned for rapid European expansion.

The opportunity

Europe's underground infrastructure is undergoing massive expansion driven by fiber-to-the-home rollouts, electricity grid upgrades for EVs and renewables, and increasingly stringent regulatory requirements. The global underground utility mapping market is projected to reach $11.7 billion by 2028, with €2-3 billion in serviceable addressable market across European fiber and electricity networks alone.

Yet the industry remains plagued by inefficiency: approximately 450,000 utility strikes occur annually, causing over €100 billion in damages globally. Current methods create incomplete records, quality issues, and costly future excavation accidents. Groundhawk’s approach means frictionless, accurate infrastructure documentation that prevents future strikes, ensures construction quality, and creates reliable records for decades to come.

The team

Groundhawk is led by Christoffer Winquist (CEO), who brings deep expertise in scaling technology companies from roles at ICEYE, McKinsey, and Nokia, as well as previous experience as a startup CEO. He is joined by Jonne Davidsson (CTO), who brings 20 years of specialized experience in remote sensing, photogrammetry, and laser scanning – and a previous successful exit of his geospatial mapping startup. The lean 10-person team combines rare technical depth with proven customer relationships across major Nordic utilities.

The impact

Underground infrastructure mapping has traditionally contributed to significant environmental harm through repeated site visits by surveyors, energy-intensive rework when documentation errors require re-excavation, and the massive cost of utility strikes that damage critical infrastructure and require emergency repairs. Poor documentation quality leads to unnecessary digging, wasted materials, and compromised infrastructure integrity.

Groundhawk directly addresses these challenges through operational improvements that reduce environmental footprint.

In conclusion

Groundhawk is poised to transform Europe’s and eventually global infrastructure mapping. As fiber networks expand, electricity grids transform for the renewable transition, and regulatory requirements tighten, Groundhawk offers the essential interface between construction reality and digital infrastructure records. With strong early traction, a world-class technical team, proven customer economics, and a clear roadmap toward AI-powered automation, Groundhawk is positioned to redefine how critical infrastructure is managed – and we're proud to back the team on that journey.
